A vast range of grain and seed products are grown in the Ashburton District including -

  • Main crop grains - wheat, barley, oats, ryecorn, triticale, maize - for silage
  • Pulses - peas, lupins, lentils
  • Pharmaceutical crops - evening primrose, borage etc
  • Brassica seeds
  • Process crops - potatoes, carrots, sweetcorn, peas, beans, broccoli
  • Multiplication of vegetable seeds for Northern hemisphere (to allow more rapid breeding with two crops a year)
  • Significant areas of blackcurrants and other intensive horticultural-type crops, including vineyards

Farmers in the District have a high level of technical skills, particularly relating to good timing and attention to detail.  Ashburton district provides a very good opportunity for integrated land use, using irrigation, with livestock grazing in the off-season, mainly the finishing of lambs for the winter and export markets, but also beef cattle finishing and grazing of dry dairy cows and replacement heifers.
